The Healthcare industry is unique in that regardless of the size of the organization—from solo practices to major medical centers—IT systems associated with patient care such as EMR and Practice Management (PM) are deemed mission-critical. Vital patient data must be available 24/7/365—practice management system failures during peak hours can have severe negative impact to office workflow and patient care. Natural disasters and major facility failures cannot impede a practice's ability to provide core medical care.

Today, when deploying EMR and Practice Management (PM) solutions, solo and group practices rely on one of two models and either take on the responsibility to build it themselves In-House or subscribe to an ASP/SaaS product offered by EMR vendors. While each of these models has their benefits, both present challenges as well.

Not including the cost of the EMR/PM application, it typically costs more than $100,000.00 a year to maintain a 24/7/365 mission-critical capability for a single medical practice. In addition to the cost, practitioners also take on the burden of being liable for maintaining data integrity, security and privacy as well as system maintenance and management of technical support staff and consultants.  The costs associated with implementing complex mission-critial IT systems, In-House make it impractical for all but the largest medical centers.

The benefits of ASP/SaaS offerings are well known—they mitigate many of the challenges to building In-House EMR/PM solutions. However, ASP/SaaS products are not without their own challenges.

 Vendor ASP/SaaS products are built around their EMR application—and that creates vendor lock. And most importantly, few if any provide disaster recovery or continuity of operation capability if there is a catastrophic event; such as a network, Internet, facility failure or natural disaster. Unfortunately, many EMR vendor's ASP/SaaS products fail to provide a robust mission-critical platform for EMR/PM solutions. Changing EMR application requires a fork lift and basically means starting over. In addition, data access and control will vary from vendor to vendor as no two ASP/SaaS solutions are the same.
